Frequently Asked Question

What is acupuncture?  How does it work?
Acupuncture literally means 'needle piercing’, the practice of inserting very fine needles
into the skin to stimulate specific anatomic points in the body for therapeutic purposes.
Along with the usual method of puncturing the skin with the fine needles, the practitioners
of acupuncture also use heat, pressure, friction, suction, or impulses of electromagnetic
energy to stimulate the points. The acupuncture points are stimulated to balance the
movement of energy (qi) in the body to restore health.

Is acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture is virtually pain-free.  Acupuncture needles are hair-thin.  Some patients may
feel a pinch upon needle insertion, but most hardly notice any sensation during treatment.
We do also offer Needle-less acupuncture.

Are needles reused?
Needles are never reused.  All needles come brand-new sealed in packages.  They are
sterilized and disposed after one-use.  This is required by NY State law and practiced
nation wide.  Patient safety is always our first concern.

What should i expect for my first visit?
First time visitor should allot 1 hour and 15 minutes for the first visit.  You are encouraged
to come 10 to 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork regarding your contact information,
medical history and current complaint.  The acupuncturist will then ask you a few questions
regarding your health.  He would proceed to check your vitals, feel for your wrist pulse and
examine your tongue.  After consultation, needles are inserted and you will relax for 20 to
30 minutes.  Most patients tend to fall asleep during treatment.

Is there anything I should do before treatment?
It is recommended that patient eat at least 20 minutes prior to acupuncture.
Patient should avoid getting acupuncture on an empty stomach or severely fatigued.

Is there anything I should do after treatment?
It is recommended that patient should relax and rest after treatment.
Patient should avoid the following things right after treatment:
  1. Taking shower within an hour after acupuncture
  2. Working out or doing anything physically intensive
  3. Stand or sit in front of an Air Conditioner
  4. Being out in the winter cold for too long

How many sessions of acupuncture do I need?
The number of sessions is determined by the severity of your condition.  Each individual is
different.  Typically, acute cases need 2-4 sessions while chronic cases may take longer.
Wellness type treatments are generally recommended for 1-4 times a month.
    Ask the acupuncturist for details.

What should I wear?
A majority of the acupuncture points are located on your arms and legs.  Wearing clothes
that allow easy access to these places are ideal (i.e. shorts, T shirts, tank tops).  We
also provide gowns for you to change into for your convenience.
